Nearby Academic and Public Libraries
VIU students can use the resources of several public and academic libraries
located within five miles of campus.
The Fairfax County Public Library System has a collection of more than 2,000,000
items and provides access to a wide range of databases. The system offers good
basic collections in business and computer science as well as extensive ESL
materials. The closest Fairfax County Library - The Fairfax City Regional Library
- is located less than two miles from the VIU campus. As a student at VIU you
are eligible to get a Fairfax County Public Library card. To get a card, go
to the Library Circulation Desk and present your driver's license, a rent receipt,
or other document establishing that you are a resident of Fairfax County. The
Circulation Desk staff will issue a library borrowers card allowing you borrow
books from the library. If you live in another county or city, for example,
Arlington or Washington, the process of getting a card for the local public
library system is similar.
This large university library is easily accessible from VIU by bus. VIU students
can use the collection but can not borrow books unless they join the Library
Passport Program which costs $150 per year.
NOVA libraries are open to the public for in-house use of library materials.
Residents of Northern Virginia can get a Community Patrons' ID card at the Library
Circulation Desk upon presentation of a current driver's license showing a local
address. This allows you to borrow a limited number of books from NOVA. The
nearest NOVA campus is in Annandale approximately five miles from VIU.
The Library of Congress, perhaps the world's greatest research library, is
located in Washington, DC. You may use the library but may not borrow materials
from it. Because using the Library of Congress is time consuming, for example,
you have to register as a user and it can take several hours to receive requested
materials, its use is recommended only when you are unable to find needed research
materials in any other library. It is, however, worth visiting the library to
see the many special exhibits that are on display at any given time, as well
as to admire the architecture of the Jefferson and Adams buildings. The Library
of Congress is easily accessible from the Capitol South Metro Station on the
Orange/Blue lines.
